OAKLAND, Calif. Archie Williams scored the game's final 10 points to beat Head-Royce 58-52 on Saturday, turning a four-point Jayhawks lead into a loss that dropped Head-Royce to 13-7 this summer. It was the Jayhawks' second straight loss and split the season series with Archie Williams, which Head-Royce beat 45-42 at home on June 12.
Loryan Boyette-Tindall opened the scoring on an assist from Tucker Peay, but Archie Williams led for most of the first half. Tucker Peay kept Head-Royce close with seven first-half points, and Alex Dornbusch came off the bench to hit a second-chance 3-pointer that tied the game at 17. A 3-pointer by Jack Peay tied it again at 22, but Archie Williams scored the last five points of the half and led 27-22 at halftime.
Archie Williams scored first after the break to take its largest lead, 29-22. Head-Royce answered with 14 of the next 15 points. Nick Taubes scored inside, Tucker Peay hit a 3-pointer off a turnover and Alex Jones scored off another turnover to tie the game at 29. After an Archie Williams free throw, Sanjay Ernst hit a 3-pointer for a 32-30 lead and followed with a basket off a turnover, and Jones added a second-chance basket to make it 36-30.
Head-Royce still led 42-37 after a second-chance basket by Tucker Peay, but Archie Williams scored six straight points to go ahead 43-42. Taubes answered with a second-chance 3-pointer, Waylon Miller scored and Tucker Peay added another second-chance basket for a 49-43 lead, which matched the Jayhawks' largest of the game. Archie Williams cut it to 49-48, and Taubes hit a 3-pointer on an assist from Boyette-Tindall to make it 52-48. Head-Royce did not score again. Archie Williams tied it with two baskets, went ahead on a basket off a turnover, made two free throws and finished with another basket off a turnover.
Tucker Peay led Head-Royce with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 2 of 5 from 3-point range, and added five rebounds, two assists and a block. Taubes scored all 10 of his points in the second half, including two 3-pointers. Jones had five points, a team-high five assists and three steals without a turnover. Boyette-Tindall finished with four points, four rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Dornbusch went 2 of 2 from the field for five points and led a bench that scored 14 points.
The team numbers showed where the game was decided. Both teams made 21 field goals, but Head-Royce needed 55 attempts (38.2 percent), while Archie Williams needed 43 (48.8 percent). The biggest gap came at the free-throw line, where Archie Williams went 11 of 18 and Head-Royce went 3 of 6. Head-Royce committed 17 fouls to Archie Williams' eight. The Jayhawks did win several hustle categories. They had 10 steals, forced 11 turnovers while committing just six and outscored Archie Williams 9-6 in points off turnovers. They also grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and held a 14-2 edge in second-chance points.
