Jayhawks Force 27 Turnovers in 70-32 Rout of Stagg

Nick Taubes scored 21 points and Head-Royce had 21 steals, turning Stagg's mistakes into 31 points on the way to a third straight win.

OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce turned 27 Stagg turnovers into 31 points and beat Stagg 70-32 on Friday, June 26, for its third straight win. The Jayhawks improved to 13-5. They had 21 steals and outscored Stagg 31-2 in points off turnovers.

Jack Peay scored the first basket of the game on an assist from Tucker Peay. Stagg answered to tie it at 2-2, the only tie of the night, and Head-Royce never trailed after that. Tucker Peay and Nick Taubes followed with baskets off turnovers, and Taubes scored eight of the team's first 12 points. A Stagg 3-pointer cut the lead to 12-7.

Head-Royce then scored 10 straight points. Loryan Boyette-Tindall hit a basket, Waylon Miller made a free throw, Sanjay Ernst scored off a turnover and Miller added a basket. Taubes finished the run with a second-chance 3-pointer on an assist from Jack Peay for a 22-7 lead. After another Stagg 3-pointer, the Jayhawks went on a 12-0 run. Tucker Peay scored six of those points, Jack Peay and Alex Jones added baskets off turnovers, and Boyette-Tindall scored on a pass from Jones to make it 34-10. Jones scored the last basket of the first half, and Head-Royce led 40-18 at halftime.

Jones opened the second half with a second-chance 3-pointer, and a second-chance basket by Jack Peay finished a 7-0 run that started before the break and made it 45-18. After a Stagg basket, a Jones 3-pointer off a turnover started a 9-0 run, and Taubes capped it with a basket off a turnover for a 54-20 lead. Ernst then assisted on three straight baskets, all off turnovers, two by Taubes and one by Boyette-Tindall, to push the lead to 60-23. Miller and Boyette-Tindall scored on second-chance baskets late in the game. Miller scored the final Head-Royce points on a pass from Nas Khan for a 70-30 lead, the largest of the game at 40 points. Stagg closed the scoring with two free throws.

Taubes led all scorers with 21 points on 10-of-16 shooting. He added four assists and four steals and did not commit a turnover. Tucker Peay had 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting and eight rebounds, five of them offensive. Junior guard Alex Jones scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including 2 of 4 from 3-point range, and had five assists and four steals. Ernst came off the bench to post a team-high six steals, five assists and four rebounds. Boyette-Tindall scored eight points with five rebounds, Miller had seven points and six rebounds as a reserve, and Jack Peay added six points and seven rebounds.

Head-Royce shot 33 of 66 (50 percent) from the field, while Stagg made 11 of 28 (39.3 percent). The turnovers kept Stagg to 28 shot attempts. The Jayhawks also outrebounded Stagg 38-13, grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and held a 14-2 edge in second-chance points. Head-Royce went 3 of 21 from 3-point range but had 20 assists and got 11 points from its bench.

The win moved Head-Royce to 13-5 in the 2026 summer season and extended its winning streak to three games.
